Tax Return Sydney: What to Expect and How to Get Your Best Refund

6 April 2025 · 8 min read · Count Right Tax & Accounting

Whether you lodge yourself or engage an accountant, here's what Sydney taxpayers need to know about deadlines, deductions and documents to get the best legitimate refund.

When Is the Tax Return Deadline in Sydney?

The deadline is 31 October each year, for the financial year ending 30 June. If you engage a registered tax agent, you may be able to secure a lodgment extension through to May the following year.

Missing the deadline without an agent engaged can trigger ATO penalties, so it's worth acting before the date rather than after it.

What Can You Claim on Your Tax Return?

  • Work-related expenses (tools, uniforms, protective clothing)
  • Home office running costs
  • Work-related vehicle and travel expenses
  • Self-education costs related to your current employment
  • Union fees, professional memberships and subscriptions
  • Investment property expenses (interest, repairs, depreciation)

The general rule: an expense must relate directly to earning your income, must not already be reimbursed by your employer, and you need a record to back it up.

Individual vs Business Tax Returns — What's the Difference?

A personal return covers salary, investments and rental income. A business return is more involved — companies, trusts, partnerships and sole traders each require separate income and expense reporting, and the structure changes what's deductible.

Why Use a Tax Accountant in Sydney?

A tax accountant is most valuable if you have an investment property, multiple income sources, or deductions substantial enough that getting them right matters. We're a Tax Practitioners Board registered agent based in Kellyville, serving clients across greater Sydney.

How Much Does a Tax Return Cost in Sydney?

Individual return From a few hundred $ For a straightforward salary-and-deductions return.
Business return Varies Depends on structure and complexity — quoted upfront.

Tax agent fees are themselves tax deductible the following year.

What Documents Do You Need?

  • Bank interest statements
  • Receipts for any deductions you intend to claim
  • Rental property records
  • Share transaction documentation
